Board Bylaws and Policies

The purpose of bylaws for the Pennsylvania Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (PACDL) is to establish a clear and consistent framework for how the organization operates. Bylaws (which can be found here) serve as the organization's internal rules and guide its governance, ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency. Specifically, PACDL’s bylaws:

  1. Define the Mission and Objectives
They articulate the core purpose of PACDL—to protect and ensure individual rights, provide education and training for criminal defense attorneys, and promote justice in the criminal legal system.

  2. Structure Governance
Bylaws outline the structure of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee, and officer roles (such as President, Vice President, Treasurer, etc.), including how they are elected, their powers, and their terms of service.

  3. Provide Operational Procedures
They establish how meetings are conducted, how decisions are made, how votes are cast, and how amendments to the bylaws can be made. This helps prevent confusion or conflict within the organization.

  4. Protect Members' Rights
Bylaws clarify membership categories, qualifications, and rights, including voting privileges, helping ensure all members are treated fairly and consistently.

  5. Support Legal and Ethical Compliance
They help PACDL operate in accordance with state nonprofit laws and maintain ethical standards, particularly important for an organization made up of legal professionals.

In short, the bylaws are PACDL’s governing backbone, ensuring the organization runs smoothly, responsibly, and in alignment with its mission.
