Changing positions within the legal field -- whether moving from a public defender office to private practice, joining a prosecutor's office, transitioning between firms or handling an unexpected medical issue as a solo--raises important professional responsibilities. This program will examine the rules governing attorney career changes, client communication, file transfers, confidentiality obligations, conflicts of interest, and duties owed to employers, colleagues, and clients. Presenters will also discuss practical strategies for maintaining professionalism during transitions such as how and when to give notice, client approach, client file retention, and avoiding common ethical pitfalls that can lead to disciplinary complaints or damaged professional relationships.
